Sebastian Inlet Report

07-05-16 TUESDAY: MANGROVE SNAPPER, REDS, SNOOK AND TARPON

We have a lovely morning at the Sebastian Inlet. Winds are blowing out of the South at 7 mph, gusting to 11 and there is a light chop on the water. Winds will shift to the Southeast this afternoon. We are seeing extreme tides due to last night's new moon.

We have quite a few anglers out on the north jetty this morning trying their luck. The Mangrove Snapper bite is fair right now. These fish are one of the most popular summer catches for shore based anglers. Inshore they average 10" - 14". The minimum is 10" although most conscientious anglers won't keep them under 11" or 12", the smaller ones just don't have enough meat on them to warrant taking them home. Use smaller hooks, leaders and baits if targeting the delicious fish. They are bottom dwellers but can be found in the middle of the water column as well. Tarpon bite is starting to heat up. Tarpon are so much fun to catch because they are great fighters and jumpers but please handle them with care. Most anglers catch and release since they are not good to eat. An angler may possess one for trophy purposes but you must have a $50 Tarpon tag, without it possession is illegal.
Our photo of the day is courtesy of Frank Forgione of Vero Beach. Frank and friends were fishing the beach just north of the inlet and did quite well with Summer Pompano. Frank doesn't have much luck with the typical Pompano baits so he brines clams the night before he fishes and does very well as we can see in the photo.

Inshore the trout bite has been good in 3 to 5ft of water with live shrimp and soft baits. The snook bite has been good with a few fish in the inlet and the bridges at night with live bait remember its catch and release until September 1st. The glass minnows have started to show up on the beach with a few snook and tarpon mixed in.

From Todd / Eric @ Juno Bait -Juno Beach

INSHORE:  Catch and release snook fishing remains good at night around the bridges.  Look for the outgoing tide to produce the best, and don't shy away from the big baits.  The snook are hungry and they will chase down a good size meal this time of year.  Mangrove snapper action inshore has improved.  The mangroves will also bite best at night, and the bridges again are e a good area to look for them.  Live shrimp and small live pilchards are good mangrove snapper bait choices.  A few big jacks cruising the Loxahatchee River and a few small tarpon hanging around dock lights in the Lake Worth Lagoon and ICW.

SURF/PIER:  The snook showed up really good along the beach this week, and have really fired off early in the morning. Small pilchards seem to be what they are chasing down, so small swimming plugs and soft plastics are a good way to go.  The best action seems to be right as the sun comes up, and will continue for about a half an hour.  The sand perch and a few croaker are biting in the first trough.  Small pieces of shrimp is the way to go for them.  Other surf action remains spotty at best.

07-01-16 FRIDAY: TGIF!

We have a stunning day at the Sebastian Inlet. Winds are blowing out of the Southwest at 6 mph, gusting to 11 and there is a moderate chop on the water. NOAA is calling for scattered showers and potential thunderstorms throughout the long weekend. Always check the NOAA forecast prior to boating as conditions can change very quickly.

We received a couple of updates; our first is from Mike Ricciardi of Vero Beach. Mike made it out to the north jetty yesterday afternoon and caught the last of the incoming tide. Mike reported a couple of regulars landed some Spanish Mackerel while free-lining greenies on the incoming tide. A few Spots were landed on dead shrimp and about a half dozen Mangrove Snapper hit between 2:00 - 3:00. Bob Green of Vero Beach landed a C/R Snook on a live greenie.
Sarah at the Sebastian Inlet Bait and Tackle Shop reported Tarpon and Sharks have been active along with Snapper and Blue Runners. A couple of Barracuda are patrolling the north jetty which is probably interfering with the bite. She has plenty of live shrimp for the long weekend!
Our first photo today features Dennis Macapagal of Kissimmee, fishing on the north jetty around 6:30 a.m. Dennis started the day off with a large Permit he landed on live shrimp. He then switched to a floating crank bait and that brought in a Spanish Mackerel. Around 10:30 a 44" Cobia hit a top water lure and the fight lasted 27 minutes! He had an incredible day with some real nice fish, including a large Blue Runner.  44" Cobia. Photo two is of the Spanish Mackerel and the big Permit and photo three features the Blue Runner.

The Fishing out of Stuart has been slow with the algae bloom. The Inshore fishing has been good from the power plant up to South bridge. Redfish and Trout have been the target species in that area. Live Shrimp or Pilchards will work the best but you can also get them on an Electric Chicken DOA cal tail With a 1/8oz jig head. The Snook have been on the beach you just have to find the clean water, you can also catch some flounder mixed in with the snook. Small white lures or flies or white with a green back are still the best colors too fish on the beach.
