Sebastian Inlet Report

08-20-14 WEDNESDAY: A GOOD VARIETY OF FISH AND LOTS OF BAIT IN THE WATER

THE TIP OF THE NORTH JETTY IS CLOSED TODAY, THURSDAY AND FRIDAY FOR WEATHER STATION REPAIRS. THE REST OF THE NORTH JETTY WILL BE OPEN. THE SOUTH CATWALK IS CLOSED FOR RENOVATION. THE WORK WILL BE ONGOING FOR SEVERAL MONTHS, THE NORTH CATWALK WILL REMAIN OPEN UNTIL THE WORK ON THE SOUTH CATWALK IS COMPLETED, AND THEN THE NORTH CATWALK WILL CLOSE FOR REPAIR.

We have another still morning at the inlet. The wind is barely moving (about 2 mph) out of the North-Northwest, gusting to 4. Insect repellent would be a good idea, no wind = no see 'ums. We're still seeing a lot of bait in the water and quite a few fish. Mangrove Snapper, C/R Snook, big and slot Reds, a couple of nice Permit, Ladyfish, Jacks, Bonito and Tarpon have been slicing through the schools of bait and occasionally one will find its way onto a lucky angler's hook.

Our first photo today is a fine example of one lucky angler. Mo from Harmony fished the north jetty's
afternoon outgoing tide. Mo started off fishing for Snapper with no success, then he witnessed an angler catch a nice Permit. Mo netted some blue crabs to try his luck. A few minutes later he was engaged in a fight with a monster Permit! Although conditions were less than ideal, if you were lucky enough to have crabs for bait, there was a 30 minute window that everyone was landing Permit. This beast weighed 40 lbs.

Our second photo is courtesy of Luke Fay. Max Fay (L) and TJ "The Panda" Knapp (R) had good luck fishing the flats over the weekend. Using mojarra and shrimp, the duo landed a couple of slot Reds and a nice Trout.

Christian Ruiz of Orlando sent in our last photo today. Christian fished the inlet with no luck on Saturday, but happened to catch this incredible sunset. A bad day fishing still beats a good day working!

Sebastian Inlet Report

08-18-14 TUESDAY: MANGROVE SNAPPER, JACKS, BONITO, C/R SNOOK, OVERSIZED REDS, A FEW BLUES AND LADYFISH

THE TIP OF THE NORTH JETTY WILL BE CLOSED TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY THIS WEEK FOR REPAIRS ON THE WEATHER STATION. MOST OF THE NORTH JETTY WILL REMAIN OPEN. THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE.

We have a hot, windless morning at the inlet. The wind is "blowing" at 1 mph with an occasional gust to 4 mph. No see 'ums are chomping away at our jetty anglers and there aren't enough dragonflies to eat them all, so be sure to take insect repellent if you head to the inlet today.

There's a lot of bait fish in the water and a lot of fish are visible in the water, and some are are hitting. Mangrove Snapper are the best bet and most anglers are using mojarra for bait. Small shrimp, live minnows or cut bait will also work. They usually run 1 - 3 lbs. inshore, so using smaller hooks and lighter leads for these fish works best. Snook, Jacks and Bonito are running, crashing through schools of bait which is a lot of fun to watch. Low light periods have been most productive for big Reds, Tarpon and C/R Snook.

The beach fishing has been good with tarpon and snook in the glass minnows with a few Spanish mackerel mixed in to.Inshore the trout fishing has been ok up around Vero with live shrimp and soft baits. The bridges have had some nice mangroves around to on the out going tide, All you ladies don't forget about the ladies seminar tonight at the Ft. Pierce shop at 6 pm.

Stuart
Beach fishing has been on fire the past days with the glass minnow run in full affect!  Snook, tarpon, ladyfish, jacks are chasing these schools down the beach.  Use storm swim shads in the pearl and olive colors, doa shad tails in the holo pattern, yozuri crystal minnows, and whites bucktails for these fish.

From Capt Joe Ward @ Bait Shack - FT Pierce

The inshore fishing has been good even with all the fresh water runoff. There has been a lot of legal size snapper along the channel edges both to the north and south in the river and around the local bridges. Some of the mangroves have been up to 2lbs. Try using a live shrimp or a small white bait.

The trout bite has slowed some but, I am still getting reports of some nice fish at places like Bear Point, Herman's Bay and the Mooring's Flats. A soft or hard plastic bait has been the best way to go but a live shrimp fished under a popping cork is still a good choice. The catch and release snook & tarpon action has been red hot along the beaches. Just find the bait schools and match the artificial bait to the size of the live baits or if possible try and cast net some live ones.

08-18-14 MONDAY: SNAPPER, JACKS, BONITO, TARPON, C/R SNOOK, REDS AND A FEW PERMIT

THE TIP OF THE NORTH JETTY WILL BE CLOSED ON THE 19TH, 20TH, 21ST AND 22ND FOR WEATHER STATION REPAIRS AT THE END OF THE JETTY. THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE WHILE THIS IMPORTANT WORK IS BEING PERFORMED.

It's a warm, muggy morning at the inlet. The no see 'ums are out in force this morning, be sure to take insect repellent with you if you head to the inlet. Winds are blowing out of the Southwest at 6 mph and the water is calm.

Over the weekend Tommy Turowski at the Sebastian Inlet Bait and Tackle Shop reported that a lot of fish were in the water, although not many were biting. After the rain Saturday afternoon, it was very active with Snook busting up glass minnow pods, Tarpon were rolling, schools of Bonito, Jacks and big Reds were visible, but they seemed to be more interested in the stuff in the water and not much was really hitting for the north jetty anglers. An occasional nice fish would appear for the more patient anglers, but it was really hit or miss.

Our photo today features 11 year old Brenden Reese who had his first overnight fishing trip to the inlet with his dad, Jonathan. Brenden and his dad are regulars during the winter Flounder season. The father-son duo was fishing the north jetty when Brenden hooked up with this big, 35" C/R Snook.
Jake McEuen of Avon Park was camping at the State Park with a buddy last week and sent in an update. Thursday morning they found a bunch of Mangrove Snapper piled up off Coconut Point. They landed about 30 in less than 15 minutes; all were released even though some were slot sized. The Snapper were crashing bait pods and were hitting Jake's short DOA lure in pink. They were too busy catching and releasing fish to take any photos!
