Scouting Around Palm Beach And Martin County

INSHORE FISHING

There has been a good redfish bite up around the Middle Cove Beach area. Using pinfish for bait or top water plugs in the early morning has been producing good results.

In the same area they are also getting sea trout using D.O.A. Jerk Shads.

The fishing for black drum has been good the past week for anglers working the Jensen Causeway, the Roosevelt Bridge and the Ten Cent Bridge. They are mostly hitting shrimp on a jig head.

Pompano are being caught off the relief bridge by Stuart Causeway Park on goofy jigs.

Though with the strong east wind the surfcasting has been difficult, there are good numbers of pompano right now along the Jensen-area beaches.

At the Jupiter Inlet, anglers are catching good numbers of jack crevalle, some bluefish, redfish and snook. For the jacks, bluefish and redfish a spoon with a good wobble on 40-pound fluorocarbon has been producing good results. Work the spoon so the fish can see it through the churned up water.

Though the inlet has been good for snook, the area bridges have been better. Live mullet are best, but any lure resembling a mullet should  get them biting. Lures with a good amount of white coloring are working best.

There are still good numbers of snook holding around the Boynton Inlet. Working from the surf Yo-zuri plugs have been effective.

Fishing from the inlet there is also good snook action with plenty of slot-size fish being caught using live croaker or mullet.

Also, the mangrove snapper bite has been good at the inlet using live shrimp or cut mullet.

Just inside the inlet, working the docks and flats has been producing a good pompano bite. They are being caught on white jigs tipped with shrimp.

North of the inlet, in the Intracoastal Waterway around Manalapan, they have been catching snook, ladyfish, bluefish and mangrove snapper. Live finger mullet, live shrimp, jigs with live shrimp and jigs with live mullet.

At the Lantana Bridge anglers are getting some small redfish on mullet chunks. They are also catching snook, ladyfish and some baby tarpon while working the shadow lines with live shrimp.

LAKE OKEECHOBEE

The bass fishing is still excellent in the early morning in the King’s Bar and Buckhead Ridge areas. Pitchin’ and flippin’ beaver-style baits and Senko worms has been working well. The bluegill bite is still good with the best action being found working the outside grassline around Henry Creek and the J&S Canal.

The spec bite has started to come up some. Anglers fishing deep in the Kissimmee River are having the best luck.

INSHORE:  The mullet remain around in good numbers, and the snook and tarpon are taking full advantage of the plentiful food source.  Look for the most action to go down early in the morning, late in the afternoon, and at night.  The snook in particular are going to feed best at night.  Look for the snook to be in ambush points waiting for the tide to move mullet to them.  Bridge fenders, shadow lines, seawalls, etc that help line up the snook are great starting spots.  Present the baits up current and let the them flow back naturally with the tide.  In addition to the snook and tarpon; jacks, ladyfish, a few redfish, and others are mixed in the inshore action as well currently. 

  SURF/PIER:   Fall surf fishing is slowly setting in along the beach.  Bluefish, pompano, and sharks are all showing up in pretty good numbers.  The pompano are being caught in good numbers on the Juno Beach Pier on Doc's Goofy Jigs.  Along the beach sandfleas, clams, and Fishbites are the baits of choice for the pomps.  Bluefish are biting topwater lures, silver spoons, diamond jigs, and cut bait.  Spinner/Blacktip sharks are starting to show in good numbers as well.  Still some schools of mullet coming down with tarpon in them.  Should be a pretty good weekend along the beach, get after it! 

Beach Fishing With Paul Sperco Palm Beach/Martin County Area

The weekend is upon us and its been another week of big surf and hard east/northeast winds . Looking at the marine forecast for the next few days the wind is going to back off but it appears as if the swell is going to stay with us. Saturday looks like the surf is predicted to drop to 3 to 4 feet but then jump right back up to 4 to 6 on Sunday and 5 to 7 on Monday. I am keeping my fingers crossed that both days on the weekend will be fishable along our beaches because the water color from Jensen Beach to Fort Pierce Inlet looks pretty darn good. Break out some of your 4 and 5 ounce spider sinkers , grab your EZ Flea Fishbites, and bring a sandflea rake with you and give it a shot. Whiting, big jacks, mackerel, bluefish, and of course the number one quarry, the pompano should all make a showing as the calendar has turned the page to October. Big poppers and spoons will attract the big jacks, bluefish, and mackerel at first light . The nice pompano we caught last weekend were caught after the tide change on EZ Flea Fishbites and natural sandfleas. The key to catching them was being able to reach them at 75 to 100 yards from the surf line. 12 foot surf rods paired with 7500 Penn Spinfisher Longcast reels are the set ups I am using and this type of tackle will put you in the game .
